Church History

THE STORY OF HOW THE CHURCH OF GOD OF PROPHECY BEGAN IN KENYA

The Church of God of Prophecy was established in Kenya in 1978 through a divine connection orchestrated by the Holy Spirit between Brother Samson Juma Nyameche and Rev. Roy D. Mixon.

While in Nairobi, Brother Samson—who hailed from Nakuru—visited the Intercontinental Hotel on an errand. There, Rev. Roy D. Mixon was having breakfast. Roy noticed Samson reading a Christian magazine and, feeling prompted by the Holy Spirit, approached him and introduced himself.

During their conversation, Rev. Mixon explained that he was a minister of the Church of God of Prophecy, headquartered in Cleveland, Tennessee, USA. He further shared that while still in America, the Holy Spirit had impressed upon his heart to travel to Kenya to help establish a church there.
As they spoke, Rev. Mixon handed Brother Samson a gospel tract titled “29 Important Bible Truths.” Samson informed him that he was a born-again believer and served as an evangelist. Roy then asked whether Samson had a pastor he could meet. Samson replied that his pastor, Rev. Charles Onunga Nyaori, was based in Nakuru. Roy requested that Samson return with his pastor, and Samson gladly agreed.

Upon returning to Nakuru, Samson shared the encounter with his pastor, Rev. Charles, and together they traveled back to Nairobi to meet Rev. Mixon. The moment Roy saw Pastor Charles, he exclaimed,
“This is the man whom the Spirit of God showed us while we were in America!”
After introductions, Rev. Mixon gave Pastor Charles the same tract, “29 Important Bible Truths,” along with additional church materials. He reiterated that the Holy Spirit had instructed him to help plant the Church of God of Prophecy in Kenya.

Following prayerful discussions, they agreed to begin the ministry work in Kenya. Pastor Charles and Brother Samson returned to Nakuru and convened a meeting at the home of Brother George Owino Odhiambo to plan the way forward.

Those present at the meeting were:

  •  Pastor Charles Onunga Nyaori
  • Samson Juma Nyameche
  • George Owino Odhiambo
  • James Ombima
  • John Onduu Owino
  • Mary Owino
  • Mary Ombima
  • Betty Juma
  • Elizabeth Onunga
  • Risper Onduu

Pastor Charles chaired the meeting, and together they discussed and agreed on how to officially start the new church.
At that time, they were still fellowshipping at a church known as “Power of Jesus Around the World.” The following Sunday, after the service, Pastor Charles stood and announced to the congregation that God had opened a new door—a new church—and invited anyone who felt led to join him. He informed them that from the next Sunday, they would no longer worship together as before, and a meeting would be held that afternoon at Brother Onduu’s home for prayers and further direction.

During that meeting, Pastor Charles clearly explained the new move of God. He then drew a symbolic line and declared, “Today, I want to know those who wish to join the Church of God of Prophecy and those who will remain in Power of Jesus Around the World.”

He was the first to step across the line, declaring himself a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. Although some were initially hesitant, the committee members gradually followed him, while others chose to remain behind.
The following Sunday, those who had joined met for worship at Brother George Owino Odhiambo’s house—marking the first official gathering of the Church of God of Prophecy in Kenya.
Shortly afterward, Brother James Ombima secured a meeting venue at Kisulisuli Primary School for future services.

About three weeks later, Rev. Roy D. Mixon come from Nairobi to teach and prepare
candidates for baptism and church membership. However, baptism and membership could not be conducted immediately due to logistical challenges. Rev. Mixon returned to the United States and came back three months later to formally receive the first members of the Church of God of Prophecy in Kenya by covenant. Thus, the Church of God of Prophecy was officially established in Kenya, with Rev. Charles Onunga Nyaori as the first pastor.

Although the young church faced opposition and various challenges, the believers remained steadfast in prayer and faith. After four years of perseverance, the church was officially registered on October 5, 1982.

Since then, the Church of God of Prophecy in Kenya has continued to grow and flourish—to the glory of God.

About Us

Welcome

Reconciling the world to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Church of God of Prophecy is a Christ-exalting, holiness, Spirit-filled, all nations, disciple-making church planting movement with a passion for Christian union.

We believe in the Holy Trinity—one God, eternally existing in Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy.

Prayer
Prayer is the first of the Church of God of Prophecy’s five core values. Prayer touches everything, informs all activities, empowers all ministry and service, and permeates the work from beginning to end.
Jesus said, “It is written, my house is the house of prayer” (Matthew 21:13). Jesus gives no other description of his house anywhere. He does not talk about curtains or furniture or musical instruments. The Old Testament has a lot to say about what the tabernacle and the temple should look like and outlines in great detail the activities that are to take place in those houses of worship. Here, Jesus paints a picture for the not-as-yet-born church to see what his house is going to look like.
Jesus is quoting Isaiah, where God says, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations” (56:7). A house of prayer for all nations. That is the Church of God of Prophecy.

The Harvest
In 1994, the Holy Spirit clearly instructed the Church of God of Prophecy to “turn to the harvest.” This was a critical moment for our movement. God had spoken to us, and his call would direct us. The reformations the Church of God of Prophecy experienced since then have solidified our determination to remain aligned with God’s harvest priority. One simple result has been a growth in global ministry; worldwide membership is four times that of 1994. Today, the leadership of the Church of God of Prophecy holds God’s Harvest call as a core value and a central mandate. It has not been rescinded or completely fulfilled. Neither can it be until all have heard.

Leadership Development
Leadership Development is a third core value. The Church of God of Prophecy has used significant resources to create systems that cultivate a culture of excellence and produce competent, skilled leaders. The Church has created stable, reproducible results in its leadership training programs and built accountability into those programs. The Church has also significantly and measurably strengthened collaboration and connectedness among ministry leaders.

Biblical Stewardship
The fourth core value of the Church of God of Prophecy is Biblical Stewardship. The Church affirms that everything belongs to God. While he has graciously entrusted individuals with the care, development, and
utilization of his resources, Christians are responsible to manage his holdings well and according to his desires and purposes. The Church acknowledges and encourages its members to recognize they are stewards of the resources, abilities, and opportunities God has entrusted to them, and one day, each one will be called to give an account for how what the Master gave was managed. Therefore, it is with joy that the Church works handin-hand with God, utilizing that which God had given, to his glory and honor.

Service
The fifth core value of the Church of God of Prophecy is Service. Jesus served. He calls his followers to serve. All across the world, Church of God of Prophecy leaders, churches, and members serve their communities in a myriad of ways. They serve through community events, often partnering with charitable organizations to help those in need. Cleanup campaigns, emergency aid when disaster strikes, youth sports leagues, afterschool programs, care for the elderly, food pantries as well as teaching, preaching, giving, cooking, cleaning, helping, providing transportation—there are as many ways to serve as there are Church of God of Prophecy congregations. Our people serve
